EASI is investing in the next generation of East African surgical leaders by funding advanced subspecialty fellowship training in Canada. These fellowships build lasting cardiovascular and endovascular expertise that returns home to Coast General Hospital and the wider region.
Starting in September 2025, EASI supported our first cardiac surgery trainee to attend McMaster University, and he has now nearly completed the one-year subspecialty fellowship. Dr. Hussein Khalif will return to Kenya later this year after completing this fellowship, and will no doubt become a leader in cardiovascular surgery in East Africa.
Starting in 2027, the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of British Columbia will welcome the inaugural advanced endovascular surgery clinical fellow from Kenya. This surgeon will develop advanced skills in minimally invasive vascular surgery to bring back to East Africa.
